How to check your IELTS Writing band score

Paste the essay, add the question if you have it, and submit. Your writing is scored against the four public IELTS Writing band descriptors by the same grader that produces our full coaching reports — so the bands you see here are the bands the detailed report would start from.

What we keep. We store the essay, the question, the resulting bands and what the grading cost us, so we can see how the tool is used and improve it. There is no account attached and we never publish or share what you paste. If you would rather not have an essay stored, do not submit it here.

The checker handles Task 2 only for now. Academic Task 1 gives you a chart or diagram, and an examiner who cannot see the chart cannot honestly judge whether you described it accurately — so rather than print a confident-looking guess, we have left it out until we can do it properly.

What the four criteria actually measure

Your overall band is the average of these four, rounded to the nearest half band. Most people who are stuck are strong on two and weak on two — knowing which is the whole game.

  • Task Response — did you answer the actual question, take a clear position, and develop your ideas with real support? This is where most band 6 essays lose their 7.
  • Coherence and Cohesion — can a reader follow your argument without effort? Paragraphing and logical progression matter more here than stacking linking words.
  • Lexical Resource — range and precision of vocabulary, including collocation and spelling. Using a rare word incorrectly costs more than using a common word well.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy — variety of sentence structures and how many of your sentences are error-free. Complex sentences only help if they are correct.

Common questions

How accurate is an AI IELTS writing checker?
Good at the things that are measurable from the text — grammar, range, cohesion, whether a position is developed — and weaker on judgement calls a trained examiner makes quickly. Treat it as a reliable indicator of the band region you are writing in, not a guarantee. Any tool promising to match your official score exactly is overselling.
Is this the same as my real IELTS score?
No. Real IELTS Writing is marked by trained human examiners, and no AI — ours included — can promise to match them. Use this to see where you stand now and what to fix next.
Why is my IELTS writing stuck at 6.5?
Usually one criterion is dragging the average down while the others sit at 7. The most common culprits are Task Response — answering around the question rather than the question — and Grammatical Range, where complex sentences get attempted but not landed. Check the four bands above and work on the lowest one, not on your writing in general.
How many words should an IELTS Task 2 essay be?
At least 250. Going under is penalised directly, and examiners do count. Around 270–300 is a sensible target: enough to develop two ideas properly, not so long that accuracy slips. The word counter above shows where you are as you paste.
Why do you want the essay question?
Task Response is partly about whether you addressed all parts of the task, which is unknowable without the question. We can still judge whether you took a clear position and developed it, so the band is shown but marked provisional.
Can I check Task 1?
Not yet — Academic Task 1 depends on a chart we cannot see. You can still practise Task 1 in the writing library and get a full report there, because those tasks come with a description of the visual.
